Alzheimer’s disease has a new approach to digital cognitive screening

Recently, the brain health and cognitive research team of the Health Management Center of Renji Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine published a paper in the official journal of the International Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) Association “Alzheimer’s & Dementia”, researchers used the MemTrax Memory Cognitive Assessment System (hereinafter referred to as MemTrax) to conduct cognitive digital screening and build nonlinear models to generate different ages, The cognitive percentile curve of the educated population, which can be used for large-scale screening and follow-up of AD and other cognitive diseases.

This study successfully fits the nonlinear trend of cognition for the first time and establishes the Chinese group reference normal of MemTrax. The study suggests that if the assessment results are 3%~10% of the lower limit of the population reference, it can be regarded as a high-risk group of cognitive impairment and needs to actively carry out brain health management; If the assessment result is below the lower limit of the population reference of 3% or there is a continuous decline in the population percentile level, it indicates that cognitive impairment may have occurred, and memory clinic evaluation and active intervention are recommended. The study also further confirms the protective effect of education on cognition, and explores the complex cognitive psychological mechanism of speed-accuracy trade-off based on big data analysis.

With the continuous aging of aging, China has become the country with the largest number of Alzheimer’s disease cases in the world. There are nearly 10 million patients and it is expected to reach 30 million by 2030, and the burden on society and families is becoming increasingly heavy. How to screen and find risk groups, carry out active brain health management in the golden window period of AD preclinical and early clinical intervention, or then dock the disease modification treatment of early AD is the main direction of AD prevention and control, and the development of simple and efficient digital cognitive screening tools suitable for large-scale people is the key. This study results provide a new scheme for active brain health management in AD risk groups.
